Here is a vocab slide we made in class, mine is about balanced forces, hope you like it!

Who came up with the term, balanced forces?

Who discovered balanced forces?

Will it ever be called something else?

This week we did even more filming. We had to redo most of the scenes, but most of our group was missing almost all week. Because of that, we had to borrow some of the other group’s people. The other group was filming Joe’s Lungs. They had a much more complicated story, and this week they filmed the wedding of Rose and Oscar (Rose and Nik). We had to redo it so many times, because there was always someone laughing. They sadly didn’t have any guests, because, everyone there was in the wedding. Mariah was the flowergirl, Malia was the ringbearer, Ellie was the maid of honor, Rowan was the best man, Zach was the priest, Rose was the bride, Nik was the groom, and I filmed. It was really fun! Spring break is only a day away, I can’t wait!

Why were so many people absent?

How did we finally get a good video, with no one laughing?

How could they almost forget the rings?

This week we worked a lot on our Joe’s heart movie. We started filming, and had to keep redoing it because we couldn’t stop laughing. We also watched a really cool video about a teenager who discovered a way to figure out if someone has cancer, and what kind they have. His uncle was diagnosed with cancer, and they discovered it to late, because soon after, he died. This led him to figure out a very simple, cheap way to diagnose cancer. It was really, really cool.

We really only filmed and watched that video. We filmed most of our scenes. Including the scene where Joe (Rowan) is in his room in the basement, and his mom (Mariah) Comes to wake him up, and yells at him. We filmed the doctor scene, the scene of Joe( (Rowan) in his office. When we were filming that scene, Rowan’s eyes were glowing, and it was really creepy. I’m really sorry that this is so late!

Why were Rowan’s eyes glowing?

When will we get this done?

How do some fish glow? (I know that’s random)

2/25 Science expo!

Again, I’m really sorry this is so late. This week we finished up pour hover crafts, and worked on the Joe’s heart video. My group is still working on the script, but I know we’ll get it done. Rowan is Joe, Mariah is his mom, Mckenzie is the doctor, Ellie is the heart, and Elliot is filming. We also did some research on the heart, and learned quite a bit about heart attacks. We had a snow day on Wednesday, which was really fun, I was outside almost all day.
On Thursday, we completely finished our hover crafts, and helped Shane bring stuff down for the science expo! The science expo was awesome, there were tons of activities for the younger kids, mousetrap car races, a wax museum, the 7th graders projects, and of course, the hover crafts! We graded 6th and 7th grade, then went and gave rides on the hover crafts. It was really fun!

How did Shane come up with the science expo, and all the activities in it?

How did the 7th graders come up with their cool projects?

Why did the banana piano get squished?

1/28

Sorry this blog is so late, and that I’m so behind. The week of 1/28 we did a lot of stuff. on monday and wednesday, we worked on our drug slides, we also worked on another project, called the ear, the eye, and the brain. We were put into groups and each group studied something different. One group studied the ear, one group studied the eye, another group studied neurons, and my group studied the brain.

Here’s our finished slideshow.

Why are the parts of the brain used for what they’re used for?

Why are there different kinds of memory?

How can we fix paralysis?

2/18 Dissection!

This week was really fun!! On Monday we dissected a pigs heart and lungs! there were only six people, because five other people were sick and Ellie had to leave early. When we dissected the heart and lungs, we got to blow up the lungs, to see what they looked like when they were full of air. The boys group had some really unhealythy looking lungs, and one of ours looked really healthy, but the other one had chunks missing. We cut open the trachea, and it was really cool! We got to see the esophagus, and the epiglottis. The epiglottis is a piece of cartilage that keeps food from entering you lungs. We also cut open the heart, and we got to see the ventricles, atriums, valves, and arteries.

After the dissection, we started working on the hover crafts for the science expo! Shane gave us the supplies, and not much information, so we had to figure it out. Rose was missing for a few days, and she surprised us by coming to the last two classes of the day on Wednesday. Those two classes were science (we had a double period). We also kinda started working on the Joe’s Heart or Joe’s Lungs videos.

How long will it take to complete the videos?

When will everyone in my class finally be back at school at the same time?

How long did it take for last years eighth graders to figure out how to make the hover crafts?

2/11 Pangolins!

Image result for pangolin

This week, Shane gave us a choice. We could write a reflection, like normal, or we could write about a science article. I chose to write about pangolins! Pangolins are the only scaly mammals in the world, but they are also the most trafficked. People capture them, and inject and fill their stomachs with gruel, just to make them heavier. The pangolins are then sold, they are eaten, and their scales go to medicinal shops. Pangolin scales aren’t proven to be medicinal, they are made of the same stuff our nails are after all!

Pangolins are extremely evolutionarily distinct and are the product of over 80 million years of evolution. Archaeological evidence suggests that pangolins originated in Europe, but are now only found in Africa and Asia. Now, some fun facts. Did you know, the word pangolin comes from the Malay word ‘penngguling’, ‘which means something that rolls up’. When threatened, all pangolin species roll up into a ball. This is very effective against wild predators, but not poachers, they can just pick them up. There are eight species of pangolins, in all species, males are 10 to 90 percent heavier than the females. I hope you learned something about pangolins, thank for reading!

When did pangolins evolve to roll up?

Why are the males heavier?

When will they become a not endangered species?

12/10 Winter concert!

This week, on Monday, we finished our candy urinary systems. Then, on Tuesday we worked on our storyboard thats. On Wednesday, we kept working on them. I almost finished!!!

Then, on Thursday, we had the winter concert! We didn’t have science, because we went to the church where we have the concert to practice. We ended up changing a few things. So it was a good thing we practiced! At six o’clock, the 7th and 8th grade string players, myself included, started playing carols on our instruments. There were a-lot of people! We then went backstage, grabbed our other music, and sat down in the audience to watch beginning strings play. They did pretty  good. Then orchestra went up, and played a few songs. Then we got ready for the second half. In the second half, each class (4th through 8th) played instruments for at least one song, and everyone else sang.

How many winter concerts has Mrs. Tobin Performed?

What songs will they play next year?

Who will play in orchestra next year?
